Heywood describes the landscape, including famous trail sites such as Independence Rock, and life in the wagon train. She mentions many Mormons by name. The journal continues after her arrival in Salt Lake City and she describes daily social life, often mentioning her husband and his other wife. The diary covers her life in the Salt Lake Creek settlement (later named Nephi) where she built a home and lived as a single Mormon wife supporting herself by cap making and teaching. Heywood's journal is often introspective.
